In 1968, the futuristic film “2001: A Space Odyssey” was released to a public who’d been told that flying cars, capsulated meals, and home computers were imminent in their future. Although not all these predictions would materialize, companies like IBM, Intel, and Nokia were indeed pioneering computers and programs that would revolutionize the business world.
That same year, ESP opened its Minneapolis office, recognizing the fledgling industry would have an urgent need for highly-qualified, skilled professionals to make computer operations run smoothly. Back then, we built our business on the ideals and practices of integrity, value, and commitment to customers and employees. We believed our success depended upon adherence to those critical tenets. And after 40 years, that still remains true.
Our Past, Your Future
When ESP began placing candidates in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, computer professionals commanded respectable salaries. A Junior Programmer or Analyst averaged $8,400-$9,600 a year. A Senior Programmer or Analyst using IBM 360/30 COBOL/BAL could expect to receive $9,600-$12,000 annually. And a Manager/Systems Programmer averaged between $10,000 and $15,000 each year. (Salaries for these jobs can reach six figures today.)
